1840: Der Jahrhundertsturm beginnt. Alvin von Briest ist ein echter Preuße. Er fühlt sich den alten Traditionen seines Heimatlandes verpflichtet, auch wenn es ihm nicht immer leicht fällt. Auf Rat seines Freundes Otto von Bismarck entscheidet er sich sogar für eine Militärlaufbahn. Ganz anders sein Freund Paul Baermann.
